Cranberry Collection  - Quilts for Christmas or Any Season by Barbara Brackman and Karla Menaugh - Kansas City Stars -

Among America's favorite traditions are Christmas celebrations and making quilts, two customs increasingly linked as the years go by. There is no more extravagant a gift than a homemade quilt, a joy for both giver and receiver, and many families celebrate the season with a special quilt for the bed or the wall.

Nineteenth-century quiltmakers loved the palette we think of as Christmas colors. Their best applique quilts were usually made of red and green with a touch of gold for accent, although seasonal celebration was not a factor in their choices. Why they chose those shades is somewhat mysterious. Other dyes were just as color-fast, and the roses and tulips they depicted certainly blossomed in other shades. "Christmas colors" is a rather modern idea, but we look to these quilts for our Christmas inspiration.

We offer here a variety of pieced and appliqued quilts drawn from antique examples, updated to today's cotton prints. Instead of the bright Turkey reds, lime greens and cheddar yellows found in the antique versions, the quilts here offer cranberry reds, cedar greens and butternut golds. In place of the classic white backgrounds we've chosen ivories, eggnogs and nutmeg tans, shades to complement today's decorating palette.

In addition to a collection of classic quilt designs, we give you a glimpse into American Christmas celebrations in the mid-nineteenth century, the years the quilts were made. Christmas traditions we take for granted, such as gifts under the evergreen tree - in fact, any tree at all - were not part of the festivities until the 1850s or so.

The quilts and the color schemes, of course, don't have to be just for Christmas. The collection offers a year-round celebration of American quilt traditions. The book includes five different quilts, full templates, and basic sewing instructions. 24 pages.
